Following week nine of the season, the projections for the Big Ten selection in the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl have narrowed to just two teams: Nebraska (7-1, 3-1) and Ohio State (6-1, 3-0). The Cornhuskers defeated new Big Ten opponent Rutgers in week nine and are No. 15 according to the newly-released College Football Playoff rankings. The Buckeyes narrowly escaped a conference loss in overtime against Penn State last Saturday and rank just behind Nebraska at No. 16.
Auburn vs. Ohio State is this week’s most popular projection with two sources predicting the matchup. Auburn defeated SEC opponent South Carolina last Saturday and earned the No. 3 spot in the initial CFP rankings. The Tigers’ only loss this season came against No. 1 Mississippi State.
Other opponents predicted to face the Buckeyes in the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl are No. 11 Georgia and No. 4 Ole Miss. Georgia’s most recent win came against Arkansas in week eight. Ole Miss suffered its first loss of the season to LSU last Saturday – the Rebels were defeated 10-7 when the Tigers threw the game-winning touchdown with just over five minutes to play.
Nebraska’s projected New Year’s Day opponents are Auburn, Ole Miss, and No. 19 LSU. Though Nebraska vs. Auburn appeared in last week’s projections and LSU vs. Nebraska appeared in week four, Ole Miss vs. Nebraska is new to predicted post season matchups this season. The two schools met for the first and only time in the 2002 Independence Bowl. Eli Manning led the Rebels to a 27-23 win that snapped the Cornhuskers’ streak of 40 consecutive winning seasons.
